How can I be sure of a fair trade?

gwtamaraJanuary 1, 2013 can't.

There will always be an element of risk in using the GardenWeb exchanges, but there are some precautions you can take to minimize bad experiences.

Communication is key...

Be sure you and your potential trader discuss how many plants you can send, and in what form...and what you BOTH consider a fair trade. For instance, I might have a boxful of beebalm to send for one small corm of variegated iris, and consider that a good deal!

Be sure when dealing with a new trading partner that you keep your financial outlay small...there are no guarantees that you will get anything in return, except the good feeling that you've helped another gardener.

Do keep good records, it can be difficult to keep track of trades once you get started trading regularly. Backup computer files, print out emails and/ or write them in a notebook in case of computer problems.

Do notify your trader when you send plants off, and let them know when theirs arrive. If they are not in good condition, most good traders would welcome that information,
and would likely replace the plants if possible.

GardenWeb cannot be responsible for 'rating' traders, or keeping lists of those who do not follow through on agreed trades.
