Florida Gardening for Beginners

The FAQ section for the Florida Gardening Forum is brand new - so please be patient while this section is built.

Beginning Florida gardeners make common mistakes. Even though the FAQ area is just starting out - I want to prevent the most common garden mistake from discouraging the newbies this summer.

Florida summers are brutal on plants. The majority of vegetables and flowers you are familiar with growing in other parts of the country are started in Fall and Winter in all but the northern sections of Florida. There are some things you can grow in the Florida summer season. Your best starting resource is the information from the University of Florida Extension Service. The website provides lists of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and everything in between, when to grow them and what varieties to plant for your area of Florida. They have specific publications on everything from banannas to cannas to preserving your harvest to growing grass and trees. I have posted links to a couple of their most popular growing guides below.

To use the guides effectively you will also need to know your plant hardiness ZONE. The state of Florida stretches through several different climate zones. Your pesonal growing corner may be additionally impacted by a close by body of water or some other feature that alters the temperatures you experience, but that will be discussed in future FAQ entries. For now, use the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map link below.
