The three standbys are Ivy (Hedera sap.), Pachysandra terminalis and Vinca minor. Wintercreeper, (Euonymus fortunei), has a similar growth habit. Asarums, especially A. europeum, are very popular as groundcovers and are especially useful in narrow strips. Ajuga is another useful groundcover with flowers of white, pink and blue and bronze, variegated and mottled foliage. Lily-of-the-Valley (Convallaria majalis) is another possible choice, but may be hard to eliminate if you change your mind. Goutweed (Aegopodium Podograria variegatum), Sweet Woodruff (Galium odoratum), Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum) all tend to be invasive, but can be useful in difficult situations. For a taller groundcover Lilyturf (Liriope)and Epimedium, especially Epimedium x rubrum which spreads nicely with attractive foliage.
