farmerdilla- Thanks for the info! They are in a short raised bed, and are mulched with straw. I've also put a thick concrete blanket over the top, so that my recently planted garlic can settle in a bit before the ground permanently freezes. Can you explain to me what happens when an onion bolts? Does it just produce flowers, or is it the bolting that produces sets?

Go to Walmart , they have nice size bags of the bulbs cheap. Onions are cold weather plants so get them in ASAP . Mine are blooming now and then some die back and start to regrow in the fall . You can leave them in the ground all year and pick them when you need them . Rick

if its right after planting.. squirrels may be interested in the disturbed soil ... wondering what you are hiding from them .. net them.. until they grow enough roots to not be pulled out.. who cares whats doing it ... ken
