I know this is 2 years too late, but October is the time of year that I transplant ramps. If you transplant them in the fall the plants are dormant and do not suffer from transplant shock. I've never had a transplanted dormant bulb not sprout normally in the spring. I look for the seed heads, harvest the seeds to move to a new area or scatter them uphill from where I have ramps growing to expand the patch. They will germinate over the next year or two, depending on the weather. Gently remove the leaf litter to expose the tops of the bulb clusters. You'll see the pointed tips of bulbs with seed stalks and a few points from bulbs that did not make a seed head this year. Use a trowel or small hoe to dig above the cluster and pry the clump out of the ground. Shake the dirt from the roots and separate the bulbs. I replant the smallest of the bulbs where the cluster was dug up and it will grow back in a couple years. Transplant the bulbs to their new growing spot. I like to space mine around 6 inches apart and cover the tips of the bulbs with an inch of dirt plus 3 or 4 inches of leaf litter, shredded leaves or grass clippings. Do not harvest from your newly transplanted patch in the spring. It's best to wait 2 or 3 years so there will be a mixture of large, mature bulbs and smaller offsets and seedlings in the patch. The dormant bulbs are easily twice the size that they are when they are actively growing and are an excellent addition to any dish you'd add ramps to in the spring.

A few years back I was being very anal retentive and felt I needed to have as much environmental control as possible to cure my garlic. It was very hot and humid out, and my garage was just way too hot, and NO air circulation. aside: Previous owner had it built. It's a heavily re-inforced 24x32 pole barn structure with an 8" concrete floor. 2 individual insulated garage doors, and a heavy duty man-door. More outlets and lights than you can use, and heavy duty garage door openers. What's missing, WINDOWS!! I painted some on the inside and hung cloth, like curtains. I told my wife it's to remind me to put in windows, if not soon, whenever we need to re-side it. Back on track. So, I figured, the basement. It runs 70-75 in the summer, I can somewhat control humidity with the de-humidifier. So up it went. I hung copper pipe from the floor joists, and hung over 100 bundles of garlic, 10 to a bundle. I turned on the oscillating fan, opened the window and set the dehumidifier. The we left for the weekend. Came back Sunday to this faint smell of garlic in the back yard. Found out it was wafting from the window. I like my garlic, but the house wreaked. My wife and daughter went to a hotel, I was left home to move all the garlic and air out the house!! A few weeks later I made a dozen or so braids, and hung them in the kitchen to finish curing in a hanging position. After a few days they too ended up in the garage. Now, I hang them in the garage, leave a door open and run a fan on them. I also have some old wire racks I got from a grocery store where I can lay things out if needed.

They do dry fairly well. We concentrate on A. sphaerocephalum and A. caeruleum/azureum. You can pick them when the heads are very tight but show color or when they're just starting to open. I think the best setup for drying is a horizontal screen of hardware cloth, but you can also hang them upside down. Chives are also good, but pick them before they start to open, when the buds are large but there's still a purple "skin" over the flowers just beginning to split and let the blooms out -- they will open as they dry. A. schuberti is very striking when dry, but it's difficult to use in mised bouquets. It's easiest to just let it dry in the field. No color, just a nice weird form. A. "Hair" is another weird one, not to everyone's taste; we treat it like A. spaerocephalum. We don't dig the bulbs up, have never tried eating them. I replant A. caeruleum every year, since they tend to behave like annuals. A. sphaerocephalum seems to need replanting every 2-3 years. A. "Hair" self-seeds -- not to the point of despair, but don't get started on it if you think there may come a time when you couldn't stand to see another one. There are more that I'll probably try in future years, including regular onions.

They don't last very long no matter what you do.You can try keeping them dry and around 70 degrees is my guess. They will die evenually from the dry. There are some palm seeds that will take a year or two to germinate but these are not one of them.
