Correction to "I've not seen the seeds in that form": I believe the picture at http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=PRLA5 is misleading (well to me) since that perhaps is the kernel of the fruit not the fruit itself. The "tri-color" (not the scientific name, thought I saw Rose-Marg????? something once) foliage is pretty darned interesting. Folks plant Bradford Pears all the time for the 13-20 days worth of flowers they have. Tri-Color is GREAT for a few months out of the year if you like that type of thing, and I do. Next county over someone in the parks department likes them. I've seen two. Later in the season when the pink whitens out one of them crisps up a little. Its not the most attractive thing. The other just faded to the white edge. My tiny 1 foot grafted one stayed strong all year, the pink did fade but all 30 or so of its leaves stayed attractive, weird. Its on the corner of the dampish part of the yard. I gave it about 1/2 gallon of water every 4 days or so w/o rain. Gets sun probably 10am to 4pm or 5pm over the summer.

These lists use categories; the beginner may not know which category to use (many butterfly names do not include the category white, sulphur, etc. in the common name), and then they have to look through every list. This may serve as a form of "forced learning"; by looking though all the lists more names may stick in your head other than the one you were looking for. And a common name cannot be "standardized"! The SC-NABN list is strictly scientific-ordered, the common names are alphabetically random. Most people would not know to look for Monarch under "DANAIDS". And the NABA list has "scientized" many common names, one example being the Juniper Hairstreak: Several species are listed as "Juniper Hairstreak variety ..." (the original common name follows the variety). It's uncommon phrasing for common names. In NABA's defense (as Robert Pyle points out), they drew the line at calling one comma butterfly "question mark comma".
