Thank you. I'll wait until spring then because I have a lot on my plate now and will until frost. I don't have to do it all at once or disturb all the plants, will see how it goes. It should be a little easier to tell where to split in the spring.

Debbie is right- your canna are fine. If they don't have great foliage in the winter for you, feel free to cut them all the way to the ground. You shouldn't have any problem transplanting anytime of year as well, although now would be a good time if knew you wanted them in another place.

I would slice off the mushy part & pour a little hydrogen peroxide on the rest of that one & store them in a dry area, maybe packed in peat moss or straw. Cannas are really robust, so one season or one year of crowding & neglect is unlikely to thwart them next year. Here, we never lift cannas, so maybe someone else can advise on the details, but I my own self would not trim any roots, soak them, or disturb things at all: Trimming, handling, soaking, etc sometimes fools a plant into thinking it's time to wake up & grow.
