The rose with the strongest fragrance in my garden is definitely climbing Crimson Glory. I'm not keen on red roses usually, but I spotted this one growing up a tree in the yard of an empty cottage near our downtown that was slated to be torn down. I like climbers, so I braved the "Keep Out" signs and the overgrown yard to get over to it. The fragrance almost knocked me over, and the dark velvety blooms are gorgeous. It is now in my garden (yes, the cottage was torn down, and that area is now a parking lot) growing around a rose folly in the center of a flower bed, so many of the roses are right at nose level. Of course, part of it has escaped the rose folly, and had grown up a Sombreuil that is growing next to it on a large arch, along with a dark purple clematis whose name I forget. The color combination in the Spring when all three are blooming is amazing. I have two very large bushes of Le Vesuve, which I love. I find the fragrance nice but not strong, and I do prefer the very strong classic "rose" fragrance of Crimson Glory. Jackie

Charles, I'll be 69 this year and have citrus in heavy 22" clay pots. I also have figs in half whiskey barrels. Been rethinking that one. Anyway my husband and I move them with a 2 wheeled cart (dolly). I think that I could move the clay pots by myself if I had to - probably not the half whiskey barrels. The leverage is all wrong. If worst comes to worst, I'll top and root prune the plants to fit them in smaller pots, sort of bonsai them over time. I suppose when I get very old I may not be able to grow the plants that I like but I intend to fight it. Buylady, We move the citrus out in the Spring about mid-April and back in in the Fall about October 7th. The timing is based on frost dates here. Because the moves are only twice a year, it may be easier to coordinate it with your helper than this year. Cath

I'm starting a new large garden where it had been neglected for decades as the house had been tenanted. A lot of earth moving and planting. Earwigs are destroying my cherries, roses, buddleia and even fig. I live in mid-north South Australia. It's not just killing them that's important but doing it cheaply. They do flock to traps of cheap vegetable oil with a touch of soy sauce; using equal parts seems a waste of soy sauce. They will climb into the jars with no encouragement so it doesn't matter if they're partly buried or not. I buy the cheapest from the supermarket in two litre containers and need two for each time I replace the oil. They will keep jumping into the jars whether there are bodies in there or not so I only empty when full. They stink something terrible so I often need a mask and dig a big hole to bury them or in winter pour them on the bonfire as I build it up. Oil kills them because they can't breathe. They're invertebrates. As much as I loathe them I feel sorry for the way they die when hit with fly spray but it's the only way to clean out a nest. I also spray regularly from a backpack with either Pyrethrum moved with white oil as a surfactant or the last of the Carbaryl I have (it's been banned). I've yet to use Coopex because it's too expensive. And despite all this I'm losing the battle since they moved onto the twenty roses I planted that I'll have to start pulling out as I have with some of the cherries. I've yet to try petroleum jelly but will give that a go, although ineffective on bush roses. The only solution is to introduce chooks, or chickens, but I need to leave home on occasion for months at a time so that's not an option. Personally, chooks aside, I see no effective solution other than planting trees and shrubs earwigs don't like. More Ash, Oak, Australian natives, Crab apple, Mulberry and others I've yet to look at. Out with roses, which would be a pity, and out with Cherry.
