theyre easy to grow from seed. One thing you need to keep in mind: Seeds from an apple, wont grow that type of fruit. A Spartan apple seed , wont give you a spartan apple tree. You really wont know what will grow. For some people, that is the best part though! Its simple. Wash the seeds using a sive, and running water. I would steralize them, using a 1:10 mixture of bleach:water, soaking the seeds in them for a few minutes, and then rinsing them of im water a few times. You pot them on a slightly moist paper towel, fold it over, and put that in a baggie. You then put that in the fridge for 6 weeks. If the apples have been in the fridge for a few weeks already, you can probably miss this step. Good luck!

Now would be a good time to pot your seedling babies up. You can use small 2" pots filled with a well draining soil mix. Make a hole with a pencil or your finger to the depth of the whole thing. Roots,seed and the "green part". Place the seed,roots down into the hole. Push the soil around the roots to stabilize it and cover the green with no more than 1/4" of the soil mix. Water well and set in a bright location out of direct sunlight. In a few days you should see the first leaves starting to poke up out of the soil. If you don't have 2" pots you can use styrofoam cups in the 8oz size. Just poke a bunch of drain holes in the bottom and around the sides at the base of the cup. Make sure the holes are large enough that the water will drain easily. When your little trees have their second set of TRUE leaves you can start feeding with a very weak fertilizer solution. The very first set of leaves are not true leaves but rather the Cotyledon leaves . These are the leaves of the embryo. As far as what soil. I use cactus mix as it retains enough moisture but drains very well. I also sprinkle a bit of sand the top of the soil as it deters fungus gnats and damp-off disease. I use just enough sand to cover the top of the soil,maybe 1/16th of an inch. I do not use play sand as its too fine and holds too much moisture. I use coarse grade construction sand. Hi Nikki, There is a page on the internet that shows pictures of every phase of growing seedlings. I don't know the gentleman who put this on the internet, and there is not a lot of explanation with the pictures, but it took a lot of effort to get this site all together. The only unfortunate part is that the pictures are not in the correct sequence. Many of the pictures about starting seeds have dates to show their progress, so use the dates to get the sequence. Lots of pictures also about pollinating, seed pod formation, seed storage, record keepping, etc. Just remember, this is one person's way of doing things - - not the only way. Hope you are as successful in getting them through to spring when you can plant them outside as you have been in getting them to germinate.
