I have the same problem. A friend told me yesterday to take an ice cream 2 litre container, cut the bottom out, and cover the sides with vegetable oil, then place around the plant, inserting the sides into the soil a bit for stabilization. The slugs will try to climb the sides of the containers but will slide off and never get in. Another method I've started using this year is to get the kids to deadhead the dandelions and place the flowers in a little pile here and there in the gardens. The slugs LOVE to congregate on these, and it makes it easy for me to pick them and dispose. Slugs disappear for the winter under the soil. There they lay eggs which will hatch in early/late spring and surface. For this reason, I'm assuming they must overwinter underground, but I'm not sure on that one. In the hosta garden, early in the season, I will water with a solution of 9 parts water to 1 part ammonia. The ammonia is nitrogen. I may repeat this a couple more times during the season if the slug population is severe. This kills the slugs and if it reaches the eggs will destroy them too. Picking them in the evening is the best control I've found. And early in the morning. Attract them with plucked dandelion flowers, grapefruit peels, banana peels, etc. If you have a dog and racoons hanging about, be creative...

I have such a terrible slug problem that along with sluggo I've resigned myself to donning vinyl nursing gloves and going slug-picking several times per day and night. Sluggo gets the little ones and my gloves fingers pluck the bigger ones. Hundreds per day. I line a juice pitcher with 2 plastic bags and double-bag the slugs, put into an empty used bird food bag and deposit in trash. Only drawback is the stench of mass amounts of dead slugs decomposing in the trash. They really do stink. Cool weather eventually will help with that. Beer works as a trap attractant but I'd go broke buying enough beer. Have oodles of cottage stone retaining walls which slugs love as condominiums. They come slithering out the cracks at all hours. Last winter even when it was below freezing they came out to munch. Wish I had neighbors with flocks of geese that would appreciate the "treat."

Condolences to all you slug infested gardeners. Last year I had a terrible problem with slugs - from huge slimy ones to tiny ones that hide down in the center of my hosta during the day. One was actually eaten down to the ground! This year I turned proactive. First I sprinkled commercial slug bait around all the hosta and any other plants they have attached in the past as soon as they started to emerge from the ground. Then I sprinkled crushed egg shells around them. The egg shells are sharp and the little devils won't crawl over them. I've also read that pine needles will work. About once a month I replenish both. Looking much better this year!

I pick them out too. My bins are outside and I noticed a huge increase in slugs when we had those really warm spring days. I was pulling them out of the bins and stepping on them left and right until my conscious started to bother me. Now I don't want to sound like a tree-hugging fanatic, but I figure most things in nature have a positive purpose EVEN when I might find it difficult to figure out what that POSITIVE purpose might be - so I stopped squashing the slugs and began tossing them into a small wooded area that borders my property. (Wish I knew someone with chickens :-) If I could find a way to keep the slugs on the poison ivy that doesn't want to die no matter how many times it's dug up and cut down, I'd be happy. If you didn't find the slugs in your worm bedding, I'm wondering how they got inside your house??? I don't think slugs would want to come inside and would find it difficult to do so even if they had joined together and made a plan to invade. I'm thinking you must have brought them inside on some plant material. Perhaps the two you found were an isolated incident? FYI: I've found that if I store my leaves up off the ground there are fewer slugs to deal with. Once I picked out all the baby and adult slugs in early spring, I haven't had any to deal with since. (I am curious about the coffee grounds as a slug repellant. Hopefully someone will explain this.)
