What is CHC?

CHC stands for coconut husk chips. This is a very good media which holds moisture well, but does not compact as readily as sphagnum moss. It is processed on islands which do not have ready supplies of fresh water, and so the salt content is usually high. CHC must be rinsed several times (3 is common, 5 is not excessive) even if it is sold as being prerinsed--particularly with plants which are sensitive to salts such as paphs and phrags.
