What is eating holes in my rose leaves?

In the spring the female leaf cutter bee makes blankets for her young by cutting out semi circles in the rose leaves and wrapping them around them. Every semi circle she bits off is identical. These bees don't stay too long and it doesn't damage the rose plant.

Sawfly larva. Hmmm. Made some homemade insecticidal soap. Sprayed. Then read the rest of the article. Don't spray on days over 90 •. Don't use a soap with degreaser. Yikes. Hope my plants survive

Looks like it could be Rose Slug damage... When you first start seeing any white marks or holes in leaves is the time to take action in the Spring so damage does not get bad... Yes they are little green worms usually on the underside of leaves that can vary in size from tiny up to 1 inch long depending on how mature they are... Your choice: either pick them off the leaves...Try hosing off the leaves with water, spray, or do nothing and hope the good insects etc. take care of them. In your case you had a overwhelming bunch of them munching... Least toxic effective spray is Safer insect killing soap...It must be sprayed directly on the Rose Slugs to be effective as it only kills by contact of the spray... Spinosad spray is effective but can harm bees so best sprayed right when sun goes down and bees are gone for the day...Spinosad kills by contact and by insect ingesting it... Always follow directions and spot spray the bush before applying spray to entire bush as some roses/leaves might be sensitive to the spray... Not sure whats going on with the yellowing could be a number of different things...

Yes, rose slugs, saw fly larvae. They're green (the same color as the foliage, because they're eating it) and they are small. Lots of fun! They like "green house conditions" where it's warm and humid, as if you were standing in a green house. When it dries up (IF it dries out) and/or it gets HOT, they will move off to higher elevations and/or shadier environs. The longer those conditions remain, the longer they remain there and active. Whether you choose to treat against them or not and what method to use will depend upon how long you anticipate those conditions to last. If "spring" is short and summer is too hot for them, I'd leave them alone and let Nature push them on their way, but that's up to you. Good luck!
