If you choose to deadhead, I suggest using a pair of hedge trimmers or an electric hedge trimmer. You can shape the bush and remove the spent blooms at the same time. I've found, even with self cleaning types, deadheading results in faster repeat on many varieties. Do a test experiment. Don't deadhead two of them, hand deadhead two more, and use hedge trimmers on the other four. Let us know if any of the methods provide faster or better repeat and bloom. That's how I've found the best or easiest way to do many things.

Just cut off the flower....no need to cut the stalk....just cut the flower and the seed pod off at the base. with a day lily you will want to remove just the bloom while there are still other blooms to bloom on the scape. Leave sunflowers....the birds love the seed heads and they won't continue to bloom. Larkspur just cut off the individual bloom stalk. Oleander just snip off the dead bloom. Linda C

I just whack the whole spray of spent flowers or individual flower when I could reach them from the ground. For climbers it's really doesn't matter where along the stem you'll make your cut. When I finally become sick and tired of 'brown flowers' (in July) on a top of the trellis or arbor I take a ladder and PRUNE them pretty much the way I prune rose shrubs, giving them direction I want them to grow. Not all of my climbers are rebloomers, so deadheading is not a mandatory task for me, just a cosmetic measure.
